The legend behind the Moor Heads
The Moor Head originates from a Sicilian legend dating back to around the year 1000 in Palermo.
According to the story, a young woman fell in love with a Moor who later revealed he had a family in the East. Heartbroken and determined not to lose him, she created a ceramic vase inspired by his likeness and planted basil inside, a symbol of devotion and sacred love.
Neighbors admired the beautiful plant growing from the unique vase and began recreating the design.
Over time, the Moor Head became one of Sicily’s most recognizable artistic symbols.
Today, every Moor Head vase still features a crown, representing the basil plant that once grew from the original piece.
